Sexual Sexual That was the singular typecast term my college professor produced as the foremost descriptor of me. Of  me ! Sexual- of , related to, or characterized by sex and sexuality and other definitions found via the service of  dictionary.com. But hadn't I the bounce of a cartoon character and the naïveté  of the Childlike Empress? No matter. A casting director can only see one factor at a time (they're not multi-taskers) and yours is this. Sexual!  I thought And what a one-trick pony was that? I hadn't realized my 2nd chakra was so overextended. Perhaps Stage Speech and Movement could help relocate it? But a leopard cannot trade spots and I soon found evidence on the casting board (always a prostitute, child, or prostitute child- because there is always something discourteous about the innocence of a child portrayed on the dramatic stage) And dramas, uninvited, sprung up around me like wild roses, untamed. I'm often told, sometimes with a bit of disdain, that I have so many irons in the fire and when will I learn to narrow it down? I receive eye rolls if I list the things I'm doing or interested in, as if people can't possibly believe that I really have time to do all of those things. I suppose skepticism is warranted. We, as adults in America, are suspicious of a lack of focus and deem it "flakiness" or "an inability to commit". We seldom celebrate the Renaissance men and women in our lives, perhaps because we find it more comfortable to categorize than include. Perhaps it is because we have listened to our own little critic voices in our heads that tell us that we "can't do the thing" because we're just "not talented" or "not good enough." I'm not interested in what the critic has to say. I'm interested in doing the thing. Also, I'm hardly saying that I'm at an intermediate level in every activ...

How do you think being a theatre arts major affected the way that you perceive your ordinary life? I think being in theatre, like being any other kind of artist, gives you a set of special lenses with which to view the world. You no longer look at things as they are, but as to what they could possibly be and what they hint at being and what they might have been in different circumstances. You associate colors and numbers and feelings and environments with the perception of someone looking for clues towards a greater meaning and intention, and you gather these things like a detective. But any one can do that without the education. It's only that pursuing a degree allows you to be part of an environment where everyone also has a pair of these special lenses, so you don't get bogged down with so many other people telling you to see things how they see them- as they "are".
